Travel and Transformation

Greetings fellow life travelers!

Do you ever notice how much people talk about travel? How their face frequently lights up when they do? Wanting to travel, planning to travel, currently traveling, returning from travel, reminiscing about past travel, and so on.

Travel has been a big part of my life. Actually, I have always considered it a gift. Well, maybe not when sleeping in a bus aisle as a kid, during an all night drive through the Alps in Europe, on our way to London, being accidentally kicked in the head  occasionally I may add. But It was either that or no travel. Three days later, I was forced to wait in the rain for a couple of hours to see the Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibition. I was one of the 1.6 million visitors that came to see the objects on loan from Egypt, My mother would have us wait as long as it took to get in. While I didn’t love the experience at the time, I ended up carrying the imprint of it for years, and it eventually, as an adult, led me to a home study of the history of Egypt.

Where am I going with this? Travel and Transformation.

“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, to gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote, To travel is to live.” –Hans Christian Andersen

Travel changes you. If you are open to it and “travel” with curiosity in your back pocket. You will learn to look at life through a different lens and appreciate the world in a whole new way. This does of course become a vehicle to better understanding others and their cultures and backgrounds, but it is also such a great opportunity for you to learn more about yourself; who you are and how you function in environments other than your own familiar ones. Your perspective can shift with endless opportunities for growth present.

Who are you when you travel?

Do you talk to locals, try new foods, explore unfamiliar places or “get lost” on purpose? Do you study the history, the politics, the culture?

How do you deal with the unpredictable changes or mishaps? Do you embrace the unexpected or do you fight it? Do you examine your beliefs and values as you have new cultural experiences?

Imagine the possibilities of travel as a catalyst in our world if we all embrace the myriad opportunities we collectively have to open our minds and hearts .

While on the topic of travel and transformation, I want to mention that it is in the spirit of discovery and curiosity that I have designed a retreat to Portugal in September 2023.
