About asking questions in life coaching

“It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.” Eugene Ionesco

Greetings!

It’s International Coaching Week!

Every year in May, there is a weeklong global celebration with a focus on education around the value of working with a professional coach and also acknowledging the results and progress made through the coaching process. Hosted by The International Coaching Federation (ICF) it consists of a variety of events, webinars, conferences, educational workshops & panel discussions. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) is the world’s largest organization leading the global advancement of the coaching profession and fostering coaching’s role as an integral part of a thriving society. Founded in 1995, its 50,000-plus members located in more than 140 countries and territories work toward common goals of enhancing awareness of coaching and upholding the integrity of the profession through lifelong learning and upholding the highest ethical standards.

What does this week mean if you are a coach? It means you will likely get all giddy as you search through hundreds of listings, in all languages and in all corners of the world in search of the most relevant to your coaching practice. Kid in candy store!

One of today’s winners for me was a webinar about asking questions.

It was not about examples of questions one could ask, but an in depth analysis of why one asks questions and what the benefits are.

So, why do we ask questions?

•       To help our clients find answers.

•       To find deeper questions, that are themselves partly answers and lead to still deeper questions and answers.

It’s the path to gain insight into the reasons we are stuck. Or a perspective on ourselves. All with a goal to move forward. A way to bridge the gap between our current unsatisfactory circumstances and the life we would like to lead.

So, what are questions?

•       Ways of developing awareness

•       Methods for stimulating and strengthening curiosity

•       Invitations to a journey

•       Explorations of the unknown

•       Adventures of discovery

•       Paths to insight and self-discovery

“Life is an unanswered question, but let’s still believe in the dignity and importance of the question.”  Tennessee Williams

In many of my social media posts I include a question for you to ponder on. It is my hope that the question might trigger a spark and get you curious. There is so much magic that happens in this exploratory process.
